Two days after the speed limit was increased to 100 kilometres per hour, several people were injured in a three-car collision near the Divali Nagar site, Chaguanas.

Videos showing the Fire Services trying to assist the injured in the accident was shared multiple times with several Facebook users discussing whether or not the speed limit increase had anything to do with the incident. The accident occurred around 7.15 am after a downpour of rain.

According to reports, a seven-seater was travelling along the south-bound, filled with passengers, when it collided with another vehicle. That vehicle then crashed into another vehicle. The seven-seater and one of the other vehicles ended up in the ditch. Several people sustained minor injuries. The Fire Services and Chaguanas Police responded.

The change was announced in a press release issued by the Ministry of Works and Transport on Friday.

The amended legislation was debated and passed in the Senate on November 28.

Under the new limit, motorists driving private vehicles and goods vehicles, whose maximum gross weight (MGW) does not exceed 3200 kilos, are allowed to drive at 100 km/h along the Beetham, Churchill Roosevelt, Uriah Butler and Solomon Hochoy Highways.

The previous speed limit of 80 km/h still applies along the Audrey Jeffers Highway, Diego Martin Highway, the Valencia Stretch and Rienzi-Kirton Highway and South Trunk Road Extension in south Trinidad.
