Police are investigating an unusual case where a woman was shot in the leg as she reportedly reached for the gun holster of a Special Reserve Police officer (SRP) at the police vehicle storage facility near the Ste Madeleine Police Station.

The incident took place around 7 am on Wednesday. Vehicles involved in accidents and crimes are kept at the storage lot and are guarded around the clock.

Reports said the 22-year-old officer, who has less than two years service, was on duty when the woman came to visit him. He said he had only known the woman a few days before. He told investigators they were having a conversation when the woman reportedly reached for his holster.

The officer said he became startled and tried to move her hand but accidentally squeezed the trigger and the woman was shot in the right thigh.

The injured woman of Iere Village, Princes Town, was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where she remains warded in a stable condition.

Investigators have taken a statement from the SRP, who up to press time was at the Ste Madeleine Police Station.

The officer contacted his attorney who was with him at the station. ASP Ali of the Southern Division is investigating.
